DAR presents 2010 Service Award

The Custer County Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a Christmas luncheon Dec. 16, and presented the chapter’s Community Service Award to the Rev. Kathy LaRocque.
“The fabric of Broken Bow will have a big hole in it when she leaves,” said DAR service committee chair Rosa Tiff about LaRocque. “She is simply a caring person who wants to help anyone who needs help.”

Trojans improve to 5-0, hand Knights second loss

LITCHFIELD -- The Litchfield Trojans improved to 5-0 on the season with wins over Loup County and Sandhills/Thedford last week. Last Tuesday, the Trojans easily defeated Loup County 71-32 as they held the Wildcats to only seven points in each of the first three quarters. The Trojans scored 27 points in the second quarter leading to a 43-14 halftime lead.
Adam Kucera led the Trojans with 25 points followed by Tyson Howard with 15, Sam Reynolds 9, Kaleb Sekutera 6, Michael Heapy 4, Nat Schrock 4, Danny Woolery 2, Austin Kramer 2, Tyler Snow 2 and Ricky Magner 2.

Lady Indians win second straight under interim coach

AINSWORTH -- The Broken Bow Lady Indians will enter the holiday season riding a two game winning streak under interim coach Brynn Jobman. Coach Jobman takes over a the Lady Indians after four straight losses to start the season. The Lady Indians have also stepped up offensively as they scored an average of 50 points in the two wins. During the first for games the Lady Indians averaged 29.5 points per contest. Their defense has also turned it around. After giving up an average of 58 points in their first four games, the Lady Indians have given up 38 points in each of their last two games.

SEM sweeps pre-holiday tournament titles

SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs claimed both the girls and boys championship titles of the S-E-M Pre-Holiday Tournament Saturday night. The Lady Mustangs earned the championship by defeating the Sargent Lady Bulldogs 51-42 while the Mustang boys defeated Elwood 63-33 in the final game of the tournament for the boys crown.
In the girls championship game, Sargent held the 24-23 advantage at halftime but the Lady Mustangs picked up their team offense in the second half to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 28-18.

South Loup Invite brings eight communities together on one mat

ARNOLD -- Four area wrestling teams brought eight area communities together for the South Loup Invite last Thursday in Arnold. The South Loup Bobcats comprised of wrestlers from Arnold and Callaway hosted the teams from Anselmo-Merna, Ansley/ Arcadia, and Sandhills/ Thedford.
The invite was a duals meet where each team went head-to-head on the mat. No team scores were kept as many weight classes were open for one or both teams.
Individual dual results are as follows:

Dennis K. Zeigler, 68

Dennis Keith Zeigler, 68 of Broken Bow, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.
He was born July 12, 1944, in Broken Bow to Keith and Lillian (Ferguson) Zeigler. he spent most of his life in Broken Bow, graduating in 1962.
March 16, 1966, he married Ruby Davy in Moline, Ill. To this union three children were born; Darcy, Deana and Dustin.
Denny worked road construction until joining the Navy in 1965. He served in the Navy four and a half years, after which they returned to Broken Bow to raise their family.

Eric W. Gallett, 45

Eric William Gallett was born May 24, 1965, in Manchester Center, Vt., and died Dec. 14, 2010, at Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow, at the age of 45 years, 6 months and 19 days.
Eric joined the United States Coast Guard in August, 1983, and was stationed in Long Beach, Calif. He met Tina Wilder on the USCG Cutter Hamilton in 1989, and proposed Thanksgiving of that year in CuraÁao (pronounced Curasow) in the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean. They were married Jan. 27, 1990, in Salem, N.H., and made their home in Boston, Mass.

Jerry Kramer, 59

Jerry (Grease) Kramer, 59, a rancher from Stapleton, passed away Dec. 18, 2010, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born June 13, 1951, to Eugene and Lenora Kramer. Jerry graduated from Stapleton High School in 1969, with many athletic honors.
Jerry could make and repair anything out of nothing. He and his father did custom haying, and grass drilling, along with ranching.

Martha F. Beeken, 76

Martha Frances Beeken, 76, was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Thedford, to Cecil and Lottie (Swisher) Herbaugh. She grew up and graduated from high school in Thedford.
She married Tom Beeken and together they had five children. Martha and Tom lived on the ranch in Gandy for many years. She was a member of Extension Club and a 4-H leader. She assisted every year with the Gandy alumni party. She also received several commendations for her leadership with 4-H.
