Ethel Huffman, 104

November 28, 2012

Memorial services for Ethel Huffman were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Ansley, Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, with the Rev. Joel Plisek officiating. Burial was at the Box Elder Cemetery at Cumro.
Ethel Rose (Shaw) Huffman was born March 28, 1908, near Filley, to L. V. and Susie (Durken) Shaw and passed away Nov. 19, 2012, at Heritage Hall, Melham Medical Center, Broken Bow. She was the youngest of six children.

Beverly Shepherd, 83

Beverly Jean (Farmer) Shepherd, age 83, of Hastings, died peacefully at home with family Nov. 12.
Mrs. Shepherd was born Sept. 2, 1929, on a farm in Custer Center to Orval “Nick” and Edna (Marquiss) Farmer. She attended Broken Bow schools. Following graduation, she attended business school before working as a secretary for the Brown Fruit Company.
She married Vernon Shepherd June 6, 1948, in Broken Bow. They resided in Grand Island, where they were members of the United Methodist Church. They relocated to Hastings in 1971, when Mr. Shepherd became manager of Allen’s department store.

Lois L. Hill, 78

Lois Luella (McMurtry) Hill was born Nov. 12, 1934, in Anselmo, the daughter of Roy and Florence (Hanke) McMurtry. She attended school in Anselmo until the 5th grade when she moved with her family to Broken Bow.
As a teenager, Lois accepted Christ as her Saviour and was baptized at Pible Lake while at church camp. Lois graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1952. Shortly before graduation, she was offered a job working for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She worked there first as a telephone operator and then in the business office.

Capt. Charles A. Gardner, Jr.

Capt. Charles A. Gardner, Jr., was born in Columbus, Mont., Aug. 22, 1922. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in May 1940.
Capt. Gardner enjoyed an illustrious military career with the U.S. Navy serving from World War II through Viet Nam. He earned several campaign medals, a Bronze Star and the Viet Nam Honor Medal, Second Class.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three children, Charles III of Alexandria, Va., Sherry Reel of Hampstead, N.H., and Dr. William Gardner of Bridgewater, Va.; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Pasture fire near Merna quickly gets out of control

The Merna Fire Department was called to the scene of a skidsteer on fire in a pasture last Wednesday afternoon, but before they even arrived at the scene it was apparent the fire had gotten much bigger than that - and Merna called for back-up. Within the next few minutes fire departments from Anselmo, Broken Bow, Callaway and Arnold were also called in to help battle the blaze spreading through the dry pasture ground about five miles west of Merna. With assistance from the air as well, the fire was finally extinguished Wednesday evening, but not before it had burned an estimated 300 acres.

Shannon O’Neill & Rylie Mills

John and Judi Mills of Mason City are proud to announce the engagement of their son, Rylie Mills, to Shannon O'Neill, daughter of Gordon and Colleen O'Neill of Grand Island.
Shannon is a 2004 graduate of Grand Island Senior High School. Since high school, she has received a bachelors degree in healthcare management and a bachelors degree in nursing. Rylie is a 2003 graduate of Ansley High School. The couple currently live in La Vista, where Rylie works for a distribution warehouse and Shannon works as a nurse for The Nebraska Medical Center.

Ina Faye Woolstrum, 73

Ina (Faye) Woolstrum, of Ansley, left us to be with God and all those who have gone before her. She began her final journey Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, just four days after enduring extensive cancer surgery.

Pat Hickenbottom, 46

Pat Hickenbottom was born April 21, 1966, at Broken Bow, to Chuck and Karolyn (Miche) Hickenbottom, and passed away Nov. 15, 2012, at Overton.
Memorial services will be Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Ansley with the Rev. Bill Ragan officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ansley Cemetery, with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.

Vern G. Bohlken, 88

November 21, 2012

U.S. Veteran Vern G. Bohlken, age 88 of rural Brock, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Good Samaritan Society in Auburn. A memorial service was Monday, Nov. 12, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage, with inurnment at the Grant Evergreen Cemetery, rural Talmage. Graveside military honors provided by the Talmage American Legion Post 246 and the National Guard Honor Guard
Vern George Bohlken, son of Harm Bohlken and Gesha (George) Bohlken, was born Nov. 10, 1923, on the family farm near Brock. He was one of three children born to this union.

Norman E. Grint, 89

Norman Edgar Grint, age 89, passed away Nov. 11, 2012, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center, Heritage Hall care home.
Norman was born Oct. 24, 1923, to Harold and Helen (Finley) Grint. He grew up on a farm east of Sargent and attended Phillipsburg Country School. He later attended Sargent High School and graduated in 1942.
Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an electrician on the USS Alpine during World War II. During his enlistment he attained his pilots license. Norman was proud of his country and his time in the Navy.
