Nebraska debates medical marijuana

LINCOLN--Nebraska could join 23 states and the District of Columbia in legalizing forms of marijuana use under proposed legislation.

Two bills dealing with the substance have been introduced and are scheduled for hearings on March 6.

LB 390, introduced by Sen. Sue Crawford of Bellevue, would create a pilot project allowing the University of Nebraska Medical Center to conduct medical marijuana research for seizure and intractable epilepsy patients.

Lillian Leona Whipple, 88

Lillian Leona (Leonard) Whipple was born Nov. 24, 1926, on the Stuckey Ranch northeast of Callaway to Loren Thedro and Glady Milissa (Smith) Leonard.

She attended school at Triumph rural school. November 13, 1944, she was united in marriage to Irvin Lee Whipple. They made their home in the Morning Star Community. To this union five children were born; Melvin Lee, Linda Kay, Gloria Jean, Reita Louise, and Patricia Joan. On November 13, 2014 they celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Donald Lee Whiteman, 70

Donald Lee Whiteman, age 70, of Broken Bow, died Saturday, Feb. 7, at his home in Broken Bow.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with Pastor Todd Karges officiating.

Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Military Rites.

Govier Brothers Mortuary are in charge of the arrangements.

Miriam Caroline Brower, 108

Services will be Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Arnold, for Miriam Caroline (Leach) Brower, 108, of Arnold, who went to be with her Lord Jesus Feb. 4, 2015.

Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Arnold Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Arnold Church of
the Nazarene.

Miriam was born Nov. 11, 1906, to John Robert Leach and Alice Marinda (Lawyer) Leach at Emmett, Idaho.

Louise Helen Miller, 79

Louise Helen Miller, 79, passed away Feb. 5, 2015, in the presence of her family.

She was born July 31, 1935, at the family ranch north of Thedford, to Lloyd and Ruth (Bohner) Hamilton. She was the youngest in a family of four brothers and three sisters.

She attended Antelope Valley country school and graduated from Thomas County High School in 1953. After attending Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney, she taught a semester of school north of Seneca.

Robert Lyle Markham, 41

Robert Lyle Markham was born Nov. 14, 1973, to Jim and Phyllis (Waffensmith) Markham in Broken Bow. Robert passed away Feb. 4, 2015, at the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center at the age of 41.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow.

Robert attended Anselmo-Merna Public Schools graduating in 1992. After graduation he attended Chadron State College.  He then worked various jobs including Adams Land and Cattle before establishing his own business known as RM Construction.

Grant L. Schnase, 90

Grant L. Schnase, age 90 of Ansley, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, at the Golden LivingCenter in Broken Bow.

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Ansley, with the Rev. Mel Shepherd officiating.  Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery with Military Honors. 

Memorials may be given to the family. 

Grant Leroy Schnase was born April 17, 1924, to William and Myrtle (Rogers) Schnase at Litchfield. 

June 10, 1951, he was married to Margy Ann Holland. To this union 11 children were born.
