SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs claimed both the girls and boys championship titles of the S-E-M Pre-Holiday Tournament Saturday night. The Lady Mustangs earned the championship by defeating the Sargent Lady Bulldogs 51-42 while the Mustang boys defeated Elwood 63-33 in the final game of the tournament for the boys crown.
In the girls championship game, Sargent held the 24-23 advantage at halftime but the Lady Mustangs picked up their team offense in the second half to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 28-18.
ARNOLD -- Four area wrestling teams brought eight area communities together for the South Loup Invite last Thursday in Arnold. The South Loup Bobcats comprised of wrestlers from Arnold and Callaway hosted the teams from Anselmo-Merna, Ansley/ Arcadia, and Sandhills/ Thedford.
The invite was a duals meet where each team went head-to-head on the mat. No team scores were kept as many weight classes were open for one or both teams.
Individual dual results are as follows:
Anselmo-Merna vs Sandhills/Thedford
152: Colton Rush, A-M pinned Chance Giles, S/T, 5:54.
MUSTANGS RELOAD FOR SUCCESS
SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs are needing to reload after losing four starters to graduation from last yearâ€™s 19-5 team.
Dillan Line is the only returning starter who average 11 points and seven rebounds per game last year.
Without any seniors on this yearâ€™s team the Mustangs will need to develop depth and experience to compete for conference and district titles.
MUSTANGS EYE RETURN TRIP TO LINCOLN
SUMNER -- The S-E-M Lady Mustangs return all five starters from a team that qualified for the state basketball tournament last year.
Sara Simmons and Megan Berg return as high scorers and top rebounders for the Lady Mustangs. They will be joined by Lauren Ibach, Deidra Brooks and Tabitha Anderson who also return as starters. Senior Nissa Brown will also contribute off the bench.
MUSTANGS SEND EXPERIENCE, STRENGTH TO MATS
SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs will be strong contenders at most meets and especially at districts this season.
The Mustangs return five seniors and a sophomore who qualified for the state meet last year. John Frerichs is a three-time state qualifier while Cale Eacker and Zach Burden are two-time state qualifiers. Traven Claflin and Collin Donahoo are both qualified for state last year for Shelton High School.
Bryce Brown was the sophomore who qualified for state at 103 pounds last year.
BOBCATS MIX YOUTH WITH EXPERIENCE
ARNOLD/CALLAWAY -- The South Loup Bobcat grapplers will be mixing youth with experience as the roster will be dominated by both seniors and sophomores.
Leading the team will be senior Logan Glendy who placed third at the state meet last year.
Joining Glendy as senior leaders will be Austin Fauss, Clint Fauss and Dylan Chesley along with Brandon Peterson and Ty Pearson. Senior AJ Hansen suffered a knee injury in football and will not compete early in the season.
BOBCATS MAY SURPRISE IN LVS
ARNOLD/CALLAWAY -- The South Loup Bobcats came together on the football field which will undoubtedly carry into basketball.
The expected starting five of the Bobcats all started for Arnold or Callaway last year and will be good leaders for a deep, athletic team.
The toughest challenge for the Bobcats may determine their success throughout the season. The team must gel together as one unit on the floor creating positive teamwork.
As these players from two schools improve as a team look for them to be among the top of the LVC and a district threat.
LADY BOBCATS STRONG IN NUMBERS
ARNOLD/CALLAWAY -- The South Loup Lady Bobcats bring together the young ladies from Arnold and Callaway to begin battle on the hardwood in their first season of play.
Head coach Abe Hinman takes over the girls team after being the Callaway boys head coach in previous years. His biggest challenge will be to bring the talent from Arnold and Callaway together to create a new winning attitude.
To be successful this season the Lady Bobcats will need to work hard on improving fundamentals and rely on defensive toughness.
SARGENT MUST OVERCOME FOOTBALL HANGOVER
SARGENT -- The Sargent Bulldogs little time to prepare for the upcoming basketball season as their football team went on to the state championship game a week before their first scheduled basketball game.
The Bulldogs return three players who had starting experience last year with Guy Fenske returning as the top scorer. Ridge Horky and Tyke Kozeal also started last year.
The Bulldogs will need to develop another offensive scorer and Kozeal and Brady Sutton will be looked upon to fill that role.
LADY BULLDOGS WILL FIGHT FOR LVC TITLE
SARGENT -- The Sargent Lady Bulldogs are ready to fight for the top spot in the very competitive Loup Valley Conference. The Lady Bulldogs return three starters from last yearâ€™s 14-8 team.
Jamie Kirwan and Kelsey Frink return as leading scorers as well as leaders in steals and assists. Alex Hart will make her presence known under the basket as she is very athletic and strong. Josie Simmons will also make her way onto the starting lineup as a very aggressive post player.
