Cosmos competes in North Platte

NORTH PLATTE-- The Broken Bow Cosmos swim team was in action last week at the North Platte Invite.
It was a successful day in the pool for multiple athletes.
Alyssa Cyboron took first place honors in the 50 meter backstroke and fifth in both the 50 meter breast stroke and freestyle. Kassidy Cyboron was the runner-up in the 100 free and fourth in the under 50 free.
Blake Denson finished third in both the Under 100 free and Under 50 free.
Chay Nelson won the 200 breaststroke, was the runner-up in the 200IM and 100 fly and placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

Seniors defeat Cozad; fall to Aurora

BROKEN BOW--The American Legion Baseball season is winding down and the Broken Bow Senior team is attempting to play their best baseball before the area tournament in three weeks and the state tournament slated to begin at the end of the month.
This past Sunday Broken Bow traveled to Ogallala looking to avenge a loss last week. Both teams were shut out through the first three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth inning Ogallala scored and added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Destination Hastings; goal Wyoming

HASTINGS-- It was the last chance for cowboys and cowgirls to boost their points in an attempt to qualify for the national rodeo competition. There was unquestionably some local flavor at the 2011 Nebraska High School rodeo finals last week in Hastings.
Dunning’s Tylee Coffman was the breakaway roping champion and Kadi McFadden, also of Dunning, placed third.
Goat Tying saw Mardee Sierks of Brewster win the buckle. Mullen’s Jincy Osborne finished third.
Oconto’s Logan Glendy continued his dominance in bareback riding as he captured the buckle.

Bow beats Ainsworth; falls to Ogallala

BROKEN BOW--The Broken Bow Senior baseball team was in action over the weekend. Broken Bow welcomed Ogallala to Paul Brown Field this past Sunday.Ogallala scored first, pushing across two runs in the first inning. Broken Bow was held scoreless in the first inning and neither squad could muster any offense in the second inning. Ogallala opened things up in the third inning, scoring five times, making the score 7-0. Bow was able to get on the scoreboard with two runs in the third inning, making the score 7-2 after three innings of play.

McCook sweeps Broken Bow in doubleheader

BROKEN BOW--The Broken Bow Junior team went one and three over the weekend in baseball action. Sunday, the Juniors hosted McCook for a doubleheader at Paul Brown Field. In the first game both teams traded shots.
In the first inning Broken Bow jumped out to a 2-1 lead. McCook added a run in the second inning to tie the game. Broken Bow was able to push two runs across in the third inning and led 4-2 going into the fourth.

Broken Bow native pursuing Olympic dream

What do you get when running, shooting, riding, swimming and fencing are combined? An Olympic event that dates back to 708 B.C., known as the Pentathlon.
Kyle Smith, 23, will soon be preparing for the initial stages of training for the Modern Pentathlon at the United States Olympic headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A year ago if someone would have told him he was going to be training for the Olympics he would have said, “ That’d be a great fiction story.”

Broken Bow tops McCook and Lex

MCCOOK- - The Broken Bow Senior baseball team went two and one over the weekend.
Broken Bow traveled to McCook this past Saturday for a doubleheader. Bow dropped the first game 13-11. McCook struck in the first inning with two runs.
Neither team scored in the second inning, but the fireworks started in the third inning for both teams.

State finals rodeo next for area youth

June 15, 2011

VARIOUS SITES - - With the rodeo state finals less than a week away, area cowboys and cowgirls participated in three rodeos in western Nebraska to close out the regular season.
There was a strong showing by local participants. Tylee Coffman was the Girls All-Around champion at the Crawford High School Rodeo and was Girls Reserve All-Around at the Harrison and Mitchell rodeos. Multiple area athletes placed in individual events.

Broken Bow falls in baseball home openers

BROKEN BOW--The Broken Bow Junior baseball team couldn’t keep up with Holdrege and lost 18-4 in three innings at Paul Brown Field Saturday evening.
Holdrege was able to capitalize on Broken Bow’s inability to throw strikes. Broken Bow’s Preston Sanchez couldn’t find the strike zone and walked five batters in the first inning and allowed six runs.
Jake McCormick replaced Sanchez and pitched into the second inning giving up five runs and walking four batters.
Bow finally succumbed in the third inning, allowing seven runs and the game was ended due to the mercy rule.

Fishing tournament scheduled in memory of Andrew Claymon

The 1st Annual Andrew Claymon Memorial Fishing Tournament is scheduled to hit the waters at Merritt Reservoir June 11.
The tournament is in memory of Andrew, who died at the age of 16 after an 18-month battle with cancer. One of his dreams in life was to attend UNL and fish as a member of the Husker Bass Anglers team. Andrew started fishing when he was two years old and became an accomplished and passionate fisherman.
One of Andrew’s wishes to keep his memory alive after he died was for his family to organize and host an annual adult/youth fishing tournament at Merrit Reservoir.
