City Council approves 15 minute parking stall at Smoke Shack

The Smoke Shack in Broken Bow is about to get a new parking stall in front of its business. Mark Walker was present at the Monday morning Broken Bow City Council meeting to talk about the request.

“I’m losing 40 percent of my business on Thursdays due to Farmer’s Market sellers parking there all day and I have the receipts to prove it,” explained Walker.

Tim Holcomb, 47

Tim Holcomb, 47 of Kearney, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. The community of Merna had plenty to celebrate this past weekend with its annual Heritage Days Festival. Not only did this year mark the 25th anniversary of the festival, but it is also the 125th anniversary of the community. A large birthday cake, so big it had to be hauled on a flat-bed trailer, was served as part of the celebration.

Increased energy demand sets new records

Hot weather, high energy use force NPPD to new record

Independence Day proved to be more than just hot. NPPD's customers set an all-time energy usage peak of an estimated 3,036 megawatts (MW). The new all-time peak bettered a previous record of 2,851 megawatts reached the day before, July 3, 2012. Prior to this, NPPD's last all-time peak was 2,671 megawatts set on July 30, 2006.

Camp 5 Fire 100 percent contained

Halsey - Fire Officials declared the Camp 5 Fire as 100 percent contained at 3 p.m. on the 4th of July. Tim Buskirk, Bessey District Ranger said, "I can't think of a better message to celebrate this holiday than to say Camp 5 Fire is 100 percent contained. We will continue to monitor the area with a couple of engines and small crew but will be releasing the rest for assignment to other fires or to their home units."

Barn welcomes visitors

Rhonda and Michael B. stopped into the Byway Barn on July 2 just looking for a travel book but instead found so much more. The couple is from mid-Arkansas and on their way to Mount Rushmore. They had stopped by four Visitor’s Centers after driving into Nebraska looking for the Nebraska Travel Book, finding none that were open.

In Broken Bow, their luck changed. Chard Hirsch had opened the Byway Barn less than half an hour earlier and she has a plethora of brochures ranging from Nebraska maps, attraction brochures and, of course, Nebraska Travel Books.

Callaway church builds school, wells in Nigeria

CALLAWAY – NIGERIA – A partnership has been formed that transcends a formidable distance, from Callaway, Nebraska, to Bagrima, Nigeria, and back. Yes this is a partnership based on need, but even more so it is based on a desire to serve.

The Callaway United Methodist Church has a sister church in Bagrima, Nigeria, and through this partnership the village has been able to open a school, a clinic, dug a deep water well, and it has accomplished these goals in less than five years.

Marion Swick, 73

Marion Swick, 73, of Lodgepole, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care from Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA).
Memorial services will be 10 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2012, in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with Mark Zalesky officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home. Following the services, there will be a reception.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CurePSP Foundation for PSP/CBD and Related Brain Diseases at https://give.psp.org/ in Marion's honor.

Floyd Geiser, 82

Floyd R. Geiser, 82 of Oakland, formerly of Waterloo, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012, at Valhaven Nursing Home in Valley, with his family by his side. Funeral services were June 29, with Masonic Service conducted by Waterloo Lodge 102 AF & AM, Rod Jobman W.M., at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn. Interment was at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Maxine Parks, 85

Maxine E. (Arrants) Parks, 85, of Callaway, died Saturday, June 30, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
She was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Bayard, to John B. and Elsie B. (Fiscus) Arrants. Maxine grew up in Morrill County and attended schools in Angora and Bridgeport.
She was united in marriage to Homer Parks Sept. 22, 1944, at Bridgeport. To this union three children were born; George, Elsie and Katherine.
