Free Fishing & Park Entry Day

On May 19, 2012, pack up the family and/or friends and head out to enjoy Nebraska's state parks. You can fish anywhere in the state and visit any Nebraska state park, state historical park or state recreation area for FREE. No park entry or fishing permit required. Also, as part of the day, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering the 15th Annual Family Fishing Clinic at select areas. In the Chief area, Victoria Springs State Recreation Area will host a clinic from 9am-6pm. You can find out more information about the day and clinics at www.outdoornebraska.org.

Broken Bow's Tanner Johnson, Marcus Miller qualify for state

Broken Bow High school fell two strokes short of qualifying for the state meet as a team, but Tanner Johnson and Marcus Miller qualified as individuals. The state golf tournament runs May 22 and 23 in Kearney.

One hurdle at a time: Tomlinson clears Hurdles on and off Track

There are some people in this world who understand that life has hurdles, they come in various forms. Some come in the form of physical objects on a rubber track that you must jump over to get to the next one. There are others that come in the form of some of life's greatest struggles.

Mullen junior Madison Tomlinson has done an excellent job of clearing the physical ones this season. She has greater aspirations to help others clear life's hurdles.

Esch bound over to District Court

Trent Esch, 35 of Broken Bow, appeared in Custer County Court Monday, where he waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Esch is charged with two felonies: Count 1 - felony criminal mischief, a Class IV felony; Count 2 - use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, a Class IC felony. The charges stem from a March 18 incident of a shooting at an unoccupied Custer County Deputy Sheriff's vehicle. Esch turned himself in to authorities April 10.
Esch and his attorney also requested a bond reduction, which Judge Gary Washburn denied. Esch remains in custody on $5 million 10 percent bond

Primary election garners low voter turnout

With still a few absentee and provisional ballots left to come in, Custer County agreed with the rest of the state in pushing Republican Deb Fischer to an easy victory in the race for the U.S. Senate.

Fischer earned and unofficial total of 1,173 votes in Custer County, while Jon Bruning brought in 478 votes and Don Stenberg 254.

For the Republican representative for Congress, it was Adrian Smith in a landslide over Bob Lingenfelter by an unofficial total of 1,700 to 211.

Chief salutes Class of 2012

Fifty-eight seniors received their diplomas during the 2012 commencement ceremony at Broken Bow High School Saturday afternoon.

Broken Bow was one of 11 area high schools conducting graduations over the weekend, and the Chief will have coverage of each one in this week's edition.

Broken bow competes at B5 District meet

Broken Bow competed at the B-5 district track meet on Thursday. The womens team took 9th with three total points and the mens side took 7th with 20 total points. The Indians saw Cody Dierking and Tanner Briggs qualify for the state meet. Krisha Scott and Andrew Pracht are also possible qualifiers. Those updates will be provided when available. Area schools compete in D7 District Track

In the D-7 District track meet, Ansley-Litchfield came away as district champions on the womens side. They finished with 147 total points and send 12 athletes to the state meet in Omaha May 18 and 19. S-E-M finished 7th with a total of 32 points and Arcadia was 9th with 26 points.

On the mens side, Ansley-Litchfield took 3rd with 72 total points. S-E-M placed 4th with 71 points and Arcadia finished 7th with 25 points.

Area schools compete in D9 District Track

In the D9 District track meet, area schools had some impressive performances. On the womens side, Anselmo-Merna placed 2nd with a total of 72 points. Mullen took 4th with a total of 62 points. South Loup was 5th with 61 points. Twin Loup placed with 52 points. Sandhills/Thedford took 8th with a total of 22 points.
On the mens side, Twin Loup came away as district champions with 138 points. South Loup was 2nd with 133 points. Anselmo Merna placed 4th with 64 points. Mullen was 6th with 34 points and Sandhills/Thedford took 10th with one point.

Project officially underway!

Ground was officially broken on the North Park Elementary school project in Broken Bow Thursday morning, with some of the students themselves having the honor of turning the first shovel of dirt. A student representative from each class was selected to participate in the ground breaking ceremony.
