Big Ten Stumbles

September 10, 2014

After tough weekend, Big Ten teams pivot forward

There are a couple of tough nonconference tests on the Big Ten schedule this week and rivalry games, too, but this week is more about recovery.

The proud brand took a hit with decisive defeats by Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan to high-profile opponents, and the Spartans have this Saturday off to recuperate from a decent performance at Oregon that got out of hand at the end.

WHAT'S AT STAKE
Nebraska hopes to avoid taking even the slightest step back after a turnover-free, 55-7 win over Florida Atlantic in which the Cornhuskers rolled up 784 yards. McNeese State is using its opener in Lincoln to pay some bills — the Cowboys will earn $415,000 — and maybe settle on a quarterback.

Big 10 preview

August 28, 2014

Four of the eight neutral-site games the first week of the college football season involve Big Ten teams.

Though not all the sites are truly neutral, all the games will generate the exposure every coach craves for recruiting. Like bowl games, the openers also will produce lifelong memories for the players and varying financial rewards for the schools.

Some things to watch in the Big Ten during Week 1 of the season:

August 28, 2014

GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 14 Wisconsin vs. No. 13 LSU, Saturday, at Houston. Despite losing 13 starters from last year's 9-4 team, including eight on defense, the Badgers are a popular pick to win the Big Ten West. What better way to measure themselves than by playing one of the SEC's most consistent winners? Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen hadn't named a starting quarterback as of mid-week, though all indications pointed to converted safety-wide receiver Tanner McEvoy. LSU has won an FBS-record 45 straight regular-season non-conference games since 2002.

Pelini not dwelling on injured players

August 21, 2014

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska has lost possibly three players for the season to injuries and a bunch of others are ailing, but you won't hear coach Bo Pelini complaining.

"There's no magical thing to injuries. It's a tough sport. Things happen, and there's nothing you can do about it," Pelini said after Wednesday's practice. "Look across the country, we're not the only ones that have some guys hurt."

Nickel back Charles Jackson and linebacker Michael Rose are out with season-ending knee injuries and running back Adam Taylor broke his ankle and probably won't make it back this season.
