LINCOLN - - Bob Allen of Broken Bow received the 2011 Special Recognition Award for the State of Nebraska from Pheasants Forever Jan. 29 at National Pheasant Fest in Omaha.
Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioner Lynn Berggren of Broken Bow, representing District VI, presented the award to Allen at the Qwest Center.
Allen was noted for his years of support and dedication to wildlife habitat, conservation efforts and outdoor activities in Nebraska. His support and efforts significantly affected wildlife habitat and created new partnerships in central Nebraska.
"Bob is an avid pheasant hunter and he is heavily involved in economic development and pheasants," said Berggren, Allen's friend for more than 25 years.
Among Allen's fund-raising efforts, he was chairperson for the 2010 Nebraska Cattleman's Ball, which raised more than $1 million for cancer research.
Allen, who owns many John Deere dealerships across the state, has served multiple terms on the board of directors for the One Box Pheasant Hunt. He has teamed with longtime friend Mike Bell of Broken Bow as guides for new shooter teams during the event since the early 1980s.
He is also generous in providing equipment for the One Box shooting complex. Allen has chaired the One Box habitat committee since the early 1990s and has been the contact person in Custer and Valley counties for landowners who want to set aside acres for wildlife.
Allen used his own time and equipment, at no expense to the state, to disk hundreds of acres of brome grass at Pressey and Myrtle Hall wildlife management areas in Custer County.
"Whether it benefits the community or pheasants, Bob is ready and willing to do whatever it takes to help," Berggren said.
And that includes taking others hunting.
"Bob's hobby is hunting pheasants. At the drop of a hat, he will take his kids, grandkids, friends, and friends of friends hunting on his family farm near Berwyn."
