KEARNEY -- For the third time in school history, the Ansley Lady Warriors qualified for the Girls State Basketball Tournament. The Ansley Lady Warrior also qualified for the State Tournament in 1981 and 1984. Their fist opponent in the 2011 State Tournament will be the Wynot Lady Blue Devils who were the 2010 Class D2 State Runners-up.
The Lady Warriors drew the No. 6 seed while Wynot was awarded the No. 3 seed. The Lady Warriors were 23-2 this season with their only losses to Sandhills/Thedford and Mullen. Wynot was 22-2 with losses to Class C2 State qualifiers Crofton and Homer.
According to Ansley coach, Travis Olson, Wynot plays a very similar style as his Lady Warriors which includes playing a lot of girls and using the press to create turnovers and transition baskets.
“They have some experience from playing in the state tourney last year,” said Olson. “It will be a good matchup of two very similar teams. Hopefully we can have the advantage on the boards and can match their speed on the floor.”
The biggest concern for Olson’s Lady Warriors is their health. The Lady Warriors have been fighting off various illnesses but appear to be getting healthy.
“We also have a few girls with some banged up ankles, but they will be ready to go on Thursday,” said Olson.
Ansley’s opening round game against Wynot is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. at Lincoln Southwest High School.
