Armstrong honored as Distinguished Alumni

July 19, 2012

Alberta Crawley, of the Broken Bow High School Alumni Committee, presents Dr. Gene Armstrong with the BBHS Distinguished Alumni Award July 14.

Hundreds of Broken Bow High School alumni returned to the community July 13-14 for Alumni Weekend, and one of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Broken Bow High School Distinguished Alumni Award.
One change that was made this year was that the award was presented during the all-alumni luncheon Saturday. The winner of this year’s award, Dr. Gene Armstrong, was also the guest speaker at the luncheon.
It would be difficult to find anyone who has had a more positive influence on more young lives than Gene Armstrong.
After graduating from Kearney State in 1958, he taught for a total of 20 years in Minden, Omaha Westside, and Council Bluff, Iowa. Along the way he earned his MA from Northern Colorado University and his Administrative Specialist degree from UNK.
He began his storied career in school administration as principal at Grand Island Senior High School for 16 years before closing this phase of his career as principal at Lincoln East High School.
Most would have retired at this point, but Gene Armstrong went on to earn his PhD in Educational Leadership at UNL and spent 10 years teaching, consulting, and mentoring young educators in UNL’s College of Education and Human Sciences where he received several Outstanding Educator awards.
Dr. Armstrong retired again in 2007, only to accept new ways of serving others as a mentor to nursing students from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He also founded and taught in the young adult program “Crossroads” at his church.
At each stage of his career, Gene Armstrong served each community in a variety of civic leadership roles including chairing United Way in Grand Island.
He was a charter member of Broken Bow High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982, and named to the UNK Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
