Broken Bow juniors, seniors fall to PWGS

May 20, 2013

Broken Bow's Chad Christensen visits with teammate Jake McCormick during a pause in the action during Broken Bow's 19-3 loss to PWGS Sunday night.

Broken Bow Catcher Seth Quackenbush had a pitch take a bad hop and catch him in the throat during the 4th inning of then Broken Bow senior baseball game against Palmer-Walbach-Greeley Sunday night.

While taking one in the throat was literal for Quackenbush, it was metaphorical for the rest of the team as PWGS rolled to a 19-3 victory in five innings.

Caleb Dodge and Josey Evans recorded Broken Bow's two hits while Hunter Campbell and Evans had the RBI's on the night with one each.

PWGS pitchers combined to throw seven strikeouts to just two walks. Broken Bow didn't record a hit until the 4th inning and their first run until the bottom of the 5th.

Broken Bow used Preston Sanchez, Jake McCormick and Jack Smallcomb on the mound and all three struggled in the season opener. They allowed 15 hits to Broken Bow's two.

The holes left without the arms of Kirby Pomplun and Michael Coleman are evident, as results will come with experience.

"They had a lot of hits in the gaps," Broken Bow coach Ryan McAlexander said. "They are a good hitting team. We made a few errors and gave them some extra bases. We can't do that against a team like that."

PWGS coach Shawn O'Connor felt his team picked up a huge win on the road to open the season.

"I think our kids are pretty excited about the season," O'Connor said. "The second game, we hit a lot better. This is a big win and it is a positive step for our team."

Josey Evans, Hunter Minnick and Tommy McCormick recorded Broken Bow's three hits and Broken Bow recorded two strikeouts on the mound while allowing 10 runs on seven hits.

The juniors next game is against Kearney Tuesday night at 5:30 pm. followed by the senior game at 8:00 pm. The seniors enter with a 0-1 record while the juniors come in at 1-1.
