Broken Bow making tourney noise

GOTHENBURG--The Broken Bow Senior Baseball team played for the B-6 Area Tournament Championship Wednesday night against McCook in Gothenburg. Broken Bow looks to avenge an earlier loss to McCook. Broken Bow beat Gothenburg 9-3 to advance to the championship game.
Broken Bow will need to beat McCook twice to advance to the state tournament in Central City. Full recap and stats will be in next week’s Custer County Chief.
Fourth-seed Broken Bow faced first-seed Gothenburg in the second game of the winner’s bracket and upset Gothenburg 11-4.
Broken Bow wasted no time and scored four times in the first inning. Broken Bow added two runs in the second inning and didn’t allow any runs in the first two innings and took a commanding 6-0 lead into the third inning. Broken Bow added one run in the third inning. Gothenburg scored four times in the third inning and cut the score to 7-4 after three innings of play.
Broken Bow responded with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and held Gothenburg the rest of the game.
Chad Christensen played well for Broken Bow. Christensen went 1-5 and batted in two runs. Kirby Pomplun batted 2-4 and scored three times. Derek McCormick went 1-3 and batted in one run and Spencer Goodman went 2-4, batted in one run and scored once. Michael Coleman pitched a complete game for Broken Bow. Coleman allowed 10 hits, four runs and three walks and struck out seven.
Broken Bow opened the tournament with a 6-0 win over fifth-seed Cozad. Both teams were held scoreless the first two innings, and then Broken Bow added two runs in the third inning and led 2-0 after three innings of play.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning. Broken Bow added four runs in the fifth inning and neither team would score the rest of the game.
Leading the way for Broken Bow was Christensen. Christensen went 1-2 and batted in two runs. Hunter Campbell went 1-3 and batted in one run. Kirby Pomplun went 1-2 and batted in one run.
Pomplun pitched a complete game. He allowed five hits, no runs and one walk and struck out nine in a dominating performance.
Broken Bow traveled to Ravenna last week and came back with a 12-6 win in regular season action.
Broken Bow scored quickly and scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the fifth inning and led 10-1 after three innings of play. Broken Bow added two runs in the fourth inning and led 12-1 after four innings. Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning before Ravenna attempted a rally that ended after five runs. Caleb Dodge went 1-4 and batted in three runs and scored once. Justin McCullough also went 2-3, one run batted in and scored three times.
Pomplun was the winning pitcher. He pitched two innings, allowed no hits, no runs and three walks and struck out two. After Derek McCormick and Christensen pitched three combined innings, Wilson Baker came in and earned the save.
Broken Bow traveled to Lexington and blew out the Minuteman 19-0 after four innings. A 12-run fourth inning ended the game.
Coleman was the winning pitcher. He allowed two hits, no runs and no walks and struck out three. Hunter Campbell earned the save.
