BROKEN BOW -- The Custer County Invite was a preview of the talent that will be participating at the Loup Valley Conference tournament today in Burwell. Seven of the LVC teams competed in the Custer County Invite and the team races were just as close as the individual races. In the boys division, the South Loup Bobcats, who scored 161 points, were two points better than the second place Sargent Bulldogs. Ansley won the race for third as third through fifth place teams were separated by two and a half points. In the girls division, the Ansley Lady Warriors were 22 points better than the Sargent Lady Bulldogs who scored 100 points. Ten points separated third and fourth while one point separated fifth and sixth.
Individually, each race included its share of drama and excitement. The preliminary races set up an exciting finals with none bigger than the boys 100 meter dash. All three preliminary races of the boys 100 meter dash had close finishes at the line but only the eight fastest qualified for the final. The 100 meter finals provided plenty of drama at the finish line as the race was so close that a photo finish would have assisted the timers. Four tenths of a second separated the first six places with seventh and eight not far behind. Sargent’s Jed Fenske won the dash in 11.4 seconds, just 0.1 seconds faster than South Loup’s Taylor Linegar.
The boys 200 meter dash final was just as close as the 100 meter final. Fenske claimed his second gold medal crossing the finish line in 24 seconds. South Loup took the second and third medals with Linegar stopping the watch at 24.2 seconds and Colter Glendy finishing in 24.21 seconds.
In the 800 and 1600 meter runs, South Loup’s Kyle Pierce out ran Sargent’s David Vincent to win both events. Vincent went on to win the 3200 meter run. South Loup claimed two more gold medals when Logan Glendy won both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Sargent’s Guy Fenske won the 400 meter dash.
In the field events, Ansley’s Ryan Hircock won two gold medals with top throws in the shot put and discus. Sargent picked up two golds with Jack Gibbens winning the triple jump and Kirby Pomplun winning pole vault. Tanner Cline won the long jump for South Loup and Anselmo-Merna’s Ryan Halouska had the winning leap in high jump.
The boys 100 meter relay provided its share of drama as expected. Sargent and South Loup were sprinting stride for stride until the final turn where South Loup fumbled the baton on the third exchange. Sargent sprinted to the first place finish with Litchfield taking second. South Loup got their revenge in the 1600 meter relay beating Sargent to the line to clinch the team title for the Bobcats.
The girls 100 meter dash provided a little drama itself. After the preliminary heats, three girls tied for the eighth position and had to sprint in a run-off to see who would compete in the 100 meter final. The final was owned by Ansley’s Chelsea Entz who won the race in 12.9 seconds. Entz went on to win three more gold medals winning the triple jump, 200 meter dash and was on the winning 4x400 meter relay team. Also winning gold medals for the Lady Warriors were Siera Rohde in the 400 meter dash and Katie Drake in the 100 and 300 meter relays. Rohde and Drake along with Kate Watts were also on the winning 4x400 meter relay team.
The Sargent Lady Bulldogs won three indiviual gold medals. Madison Kozeal won the 400 meter dash, Brenda Maldonado won the 3200 meter run, Megan Davis won high jump and Rebecca Davenport had the winning leap in the long jump.
South Loup’s gold medal winners were Michala Dockweiler who won the 1600 meter run, Kali Blevins won the pole vault and Michaela Weverka had the top throw in shot put.
Hollie O’Brien produced one of two gold medals won by Arcadia. O’Brien won the discus throw and Arcadia won the girls 4x800 meter relay. Litchfield’s only gold medal came courtesy of their 4x100 meter relay team.
Look for these seven teams to put together strong performances at the LVC meet today in Burwell. Add teams from Mullen and Sandhills/Thedford and competition just got stronger.
