Ellen Karlberg, 83

Ellen L. Karlberg, 83, of Sumner, earthly life ended and she entered eternal life with her Lord and Savior March 11, 2011.
Ellen Lorraine Karlberg was born to Ralph and Mary (Lahm) Scoville Aug. 25, 1927, in Sumner. She attended school in Sumner for 12 years and graduated from Sumner High School in 1944, at age 16.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior while attending Polk Bible Camp. After high school graduation, she attended summer school at college in Kearney. She then taught rural schools for three years. Then she attended Trinity Bible College in Chicago, Ill., for one year. During this time she became engaged to Maurice Karlberg. In that she was still not 21 years of age, she had to get parental permission to get married. Ellen was united in marriage to Maurice Karlberg July 23, 1948.
Ellen became a pastor’s wife, serving churches in Minnesota and Nebraska with her husband. Three children were born to this union, Karen Sue, Timothy Alan and David Wesley.
In 1959 Maurice and Ellen returned to the farm in rural Sumner area. Ellen was very active in her church and community. In 1987, they moved off the farm into Sumner.
Some of the highlights in Ellen’s life included volunteering at SEM School as an aid to elementary students. One thing she really enjoyed was making every holiday special for the kids by crafting special treat/gifts to give to each child. She also taught an interdenominational ladies’ Bible study in Sumner for many years.
She was devoted in writing letters to her children and grandchildren and those in care homes on a weekly basis. She had a servant’s heart which reached out and touched many lives.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Maurice W. Karlberg of Sumner; one daughter, Karen Sue (Gail) Coleman of Greeley, Colo.; two sons, Timothy Alan (Deb) Karlberg of Wheatland, Wyo., and David Wesley (Carol) Karlberg of Sumner; four brothers, Robert D. (Marjorie) Pierce of Sumner, L. Keith (Pat) Scoville of Holdrege, Neil G. (Shirley) Scoville of Kansas City, Mo., and Lorin R. (Charlene) Scoville of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one sister, Marilyn J. Bauer of Kearney; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Scoville of Elm Creek, and Ardella Scoville of Sumner; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Arlene and Lovell Potter of Flagstaff, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren’ many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Dean and Marvin Scoville; brother-in-law Larry Bauer; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Leland and Marge Karlberg.
Funeral Services were March 14, 2011, at the United Church of Sumner – East Campus, in Sumner, with Pastor Ken Hutson, officiating.
Interment was in the Sumner Cemetery at Sumner. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Online condolences may be direct to the family through: reynoldslovefuneralhome.com.
