Gold earned in Omaha - update

February 22, 2014

Grant Clausen, a junior from Sumner-Eddyville-Miller collects his gold medal at the State High School Wrestling meet.

Ladies and gentlemen - we have gold. We are half way through the State High School Wrestling finals and central Nebraska has gold.

Grant Clausen of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller took on Zachary Zeleski of Overton and won in hard fought match 3-1 that went into overtime. It was an OT takedown that made the difference. Grant wrestles at 285.

This year the meet started with the 195 pound weight class.

Wyatt Lane, wrestling at D106 for Arcadia Loup City, also takes home gold. He defeated Jacob Calvert of Dundy County-Stratton in the championship match with a 6-5 decision.

Brook Huffman of Sargent/Burwell-Loup County takes home a well-earned second. He lost to Trent Wagner of Madison in the championship match. Wagner entered and left the match undefeated on the season.

Evan Gideon of Sargent/Burwell-Loup County recorded his first loss of the season in a heart-pounding 3-2 match against Joseph Gillham of O'Neill. Both are seniors and both are returning state high school wrestling medal winners. This was Evan's fourth trip to Omaha.

Central Nebraska puts eight wrestlers on the medal stand: 1st places - Wyatt Lane and Grant Clausen; 2nd places - Evan Gideon and Brook Huffman; third places - Gideon Monette; fifth places - Dalton Zimmerman, Dakota Harvey and Dakota Divine.

Congratulations to all of this year's state high school wrestling finalists.
