Ivan R. Cooley, age 89 of Broken Bow, died Jan. 13, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services were. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Govier Brothers Mortuary with Pastor Kathy Salts officiating. Interment was at the Westerville Cemetery with Military Honors with Govioer Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Westerville Cemetery.
Ivan Rex Cooley was born June 11, 1923, near Gates, to Rex and Marie (Allison) Cooley. He attended school at Gates and graduated from Westerville High School in 1941.
May 7, 1942, he was married to Beatrice Datus and to this union three children were born: Gary Lee on Sept. 29, 1943, Larry Dale on Sept. 27, 1948 and Nancy Annette on Dec. 26, 1954.
He farmed with his father near the Westerville community for a number of years before relocating to Albany, Ore. where he worked in the plywood mills, returning to Custer County the following year.
Ivan was drafted into the US Navy and was stationed in San Clemete Island in San Diego, Calif. Later he was sent to the Philippines as a Seaman First Class. He received the Victory Medal, American Apea Campaign Medal, and the Asiatec Pacific Area Campaign Medal. He returned home in May of 1946.
The family moved to the Emil Volsky property near Westerville to return to farming. Later they purchased the Virgil Datus farm in 1967. Along with farming he drove trucks for Virgil Datus, Bill and Art Anderson for many years, hauling corn and small grains. He later worked for Gary Coble Construction Company.
In 1985, they moved to Broken Bow to manage the William Penn Lodge. Eventually they returned to their farm in the Westerville area, where Ivan enjoyed wood working in his shop, making bird houses and replicas of the grocery store, filling station, post office and school house of Westerville.
If anyone ever needed assistance or help of any kind he was always one of the first to respond. He was a loving husband and father and a life long friend to many.
He belonged to the Broken Bow Elk's Lodge 1688, and was a life time member of the American Legion Post 153.
Ivan was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice; sons, Gary and Larry; granddaughter, Stephani; parents, Rex and Marie; a brother, Dale and sister-in-law Bonnie, and a sister Maxine and brother-in-law Dean Wood.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy and husband Joel Brown of Lone Tree, Colo.; granddaughter, Tiffany Guthrie, daughter-in-law, Doris (Wright) Cooley; grandson, Mark; great-granddaughter, Samantha; sister LaVina and brother-in-law Edmund Swanek of Council Bluffs, Iowa; along with numerous nieces, nephews and family and friends.
