Joe Burnett was born Nov. 24, 1923, at Berwyn, the second child of Douglas and Maymae Pracht Burnett. He went to school and grew up around Berwyn.
He enlisted in the Army, served in WWII, and after his completed duty he returned to his family home at Merna.
He was united in marriage to Reva Payne April 23, 1958. To this union six children were born: Clifford (Vickie) Burnett of Merna, Carla (Allen) Williams of Merna, Elaine (Matt) Schoenrock of Cortland, Carole (Mark) Porter of Merna, Dale (Angela) Burnett of Anselmo and Marla (Jim) Dutton of Grand Island.
He has been blessed with 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He always loved it when he had family around, and hated it when it got quiet when everyone left!
He spent his life farming and ranching, and after he was unable to continue that he turned to farming in his large garden and raising chickens.
He left this world and went Home May 10, 2011. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Reva; parents, Douglas and Maymae; brothers, Melvin, Floyd and Clifford; parents-in-law, Gordon and Lucille Payne; brothers-in-law, Gerald McCaslin, Ivan Geiser; and grandson, Riley Burnett.
Left to mourn his passing are his children and 21 beloved grandkids, Melissa (Russ) Epperson, Jeffery, Jonathon, Michael, Jessi, Jayden Burnett; Jerry and Jason (Hillary) Williams; Amanda, Rachael, Haylee, Theron, Ty Schoenrock; Travis (fiance) Lyndsey, Kayla, Mitchell Porter; Lindsey and Kendra Burnett; Nick, Caleb, and Alex Dutton; three great-grandkids, Peyton Williams, and Delani and Emma Haines; sister, Lucille McCaslin of Sidney; brother, Clair (Leah) Burnett of Anselmo; sisters-in-law, Thelma Burnett of Broken Bow and Janice Greiser of Merna, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
His memories we will all continue to share; holiday dinners, gardening, snapping beans, and even our annual chicken dressing days at grandpa's. He was loved by many and will be forever missed.
