Norman E. Grint, 89

Norman Edgar Grint, age 89, passed away Nov. 11, 2012, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center, Heritage Hall care home.
Norman was born Oct. 24, 1923, to Harold and Helen (Finley) Grint. He grew up on a farm east of Sargent and attended Phillipsburg Country School. He later attended Sargent High School and graduated in 1942.
Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an electrician on the USS Alpine during World War II. During his enlistment he attained his pilots license. Norman was proud of his country and his time in the Navy.
He received a purple heart and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Norman then returned home and started farming with a few milk cows. Norman married Merlene Pulliam in May 1945. While on the farm they had two sons, John Edmund and Richard Duane.
Soon after the boys were born, Norman moved his family to town and purchased the Sun Theater, owned by John Green. They then bought and opened a clothing store, The Fashion Nook, which after several years burned down. This resulted in closing the theater and moving the clothing store to the theater location, which remained there until they sold in 1984.
During their time in town, Norman and Merlene had a daughter, JoLynn.
In the early 1950s, Norman started his career as a rural mail carrier and continued operating his farm and fed some cattle. Norman also started a crop spraying business in the early 50s through the mid 60s.
Norman retired in the early 70s from the U.S. Postal Service. Norman thoroughly enjoyed his retired years fishing, hunting and his trips to Canada. During his retired years, Norman and Merlene wintered in Arizona for 24 years and made many life-long friends.
Norman particularly enjoy-ed following his grandchildren’s many activities; 4-H, rodeos and sports. He enjoyed teaching them all his hunting and fishing skills.
Norman was a member of the Elks, VFW, American Legion, Masons and Retired Fireman.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Grint.
Survivors include his wife, Merlene; sons, John and wife Sheri of Chadron, Dick and wife Coleen of Sargent; daughter, JoLynn and husband Brian Jones of Mason City; one brother, Arthur of Cerritos, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent with Marvin Bauer officiating. Inurnment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sargent, with military graveside services. Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent was in charge of arrangements.
