Robert L. Hammond, 89, of Kearney died Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev Joe Hannappel will officiate.
Cremation will follow mass and burial of cremains will be in the Broken Bow Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday at the church with a vigil to follow at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Association. O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Robert Hammond was born in Mason City Feb. 4, 1923, to William and Agnes (Davolt) Hammond. He attended school in Berwyn, graduating in 1941. He was married to LaRue Hauck Feb. 22, 1947, in Mason City. They farmed in Custer County, Nebraska. He also was a crop adjuster and sold Pioneer Seed for 27 years.
They moved to Kearney in 1984. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was a tinkerer and enjoyed fixing things. He enjoyed the time spent in his garden and doing yard work.
Survivors include his wife, LaRue of Kearney; sons, James (Judy) of Litchfield and Edward (Deborah) of Riverdale; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Marvin (Pearl) of Pennsylvania, Earl (Beverly) of Biloxi, Miss., Larry (Marlis) of Carmel, Ind., and Bill of Ceresco; sister, Angenette Adams-Denisia and husband, Don of Broken Bow; sister-in-law, Joan Hammond of Houston, Texas; and brother-in-law, Bruce Evans of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven; daughter, Trudy Day; grandson, Brian Hammond, brothers, Jack and Leonard; sister, Alnetta Evans; and sister-in-law, Kay Hammond.
