Ruby Pearl (Peterson) McCandless, 97, of Broken Bow, passed away of natural causes Nov. 29, 2010, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Ruby was born June 7, 1913, in a sod house at Weissert, Custer County, Nebraska, to Milton and Mable (Govier) Peterson. She was the youngest of nine children. She live all of her life in Custer County.
Ruby married Melvin LeRoy (Roy) McCandless Dec. 22, 1932, in Julesburg, Colo. They had four sons, William, Eldon, Terry and Nick; and one daughter, Ardith Joleen.
Most of her life was spent as a farm wife. It was during the hard times when it wasnâ€™t easy raising a family. After her husband died in 1976 she like to help out where she could and did so as long as she could. She volunteered at nursing homes fixing hair, was a Broken Bow Ambassador and a member of the Rebeccaâ€™s and the Doeâ€™s. She loved to go to Miller to dances, her poodle dogs, and being a constant companion to Joleen and her girls.
Survivors include, her son, Eldon (Connie) McCandless and daughter, Joleen McCandless Linder, all of Broken Bow; daughter-in-law Isabelle McCandless of Merna; 12 grandchildren, William (Bill)â€™s six girls, Bonnie (Rod) Baxter of Broken Bow, Pamela (Ben) Gilligan of Anselmo, Louise (Tyke) Arnold of Broken Bow, Cynthia (Paul) Christen of Anselmo, Julie (Jerry) McCaslin of Kearney, and Peggy (Jeff) Steele of Gibbon; Eldonâ€™s three girls, Marla Thompson of North Platte, Jonie (Rick) Lenz of Broken Bow and Jeanne McCandless of Washington, Iowa; Joleenâ€™s three girls, Amber (Duane) Corbin of Broken bow, Jaide Linder (Scott Taylor) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and KyAna Linder of Broken Bow; 41 great-grandchildren, William (Bill)â€™s 27 grandchildren, Tressa (James) White, Kathryn (Robert) Harrold, William Baxter, Anthony (Laurie Baxter, MacTyler (Danielle) Gilligan, Tanyor (Ginger) Gilligan, Tristina, Terisa, Trey and Troy Gilligan, Tyke (Kindle) Arnold, Jullian and Cole Arnold, Richard, Emily, Andrew, Joseph, Adam and Luke, Christen, Tara, Jordan, Brady and Carter McCaslin, Austin, Alexander, Christian and Bennett Steele; Eldonâ€™s 12 grandchildren, Brant (Charlene) Green, Jason (Amber) Dowse, Trisha Dowse, Kyra (Chad) Seefeld, Ginger McCandless, Tyler (Aledia) Lenz, Tyson (Darla) Lenz, Laren Garrett, Lindy (Chris) Leeper, Laruel Lea (John) Gingerich, Larry Garret and LexAndra Bratton; Joleenâ€™s two grandchildren, Radall Adams Corbin and Thaddius Taylor; 28 great-great-grandchildren, William (Bill)â€™s 17 great-grandchildren, Cassiddee, Jaicee and Trulee White, Carra, Kellsey and Tallen Harrold, Keegan and Kinley Baxter, Kyle and Clayton Baxter, Kaileigh, McKinna and Mattox Gilligan, Elsie Gilligan, C.J. and Kaden Arnold, and Adyn McCaslin; Eldonâ€™s 11 great-grandchildren, Isabella Green, Jayden, Lauryn and Lily Dowse, Madison, Emmie and Sophie Seefeld, Jaxson Fullerton, Alexias and Natalie Lenz, and Ian Gingerich; with more on the way; she had numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Leroy (Roy) McCandless, three sons, William (Bill( Duane, Terry Troy, Nicholas Lynn McCandless; one grandson, Eldonâ€™s son, Terry Roy McCandless; one son-in-law, Joleenâ€™s husband, Randy Linder; parents Melton and Mable (Govier) Peterson, maternal grandparents, John and Rebecca (McKee Beamer) Govier; paternal grandparents, Milton and Mary (Jacobson) Peterson, eight sister and brothers, Hazel, Iva, Frank, Amelia, John, Gladis, Andrew and Pete.
Funeral services are today, Dec. 2, 2010, at the Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Interment will be at the Arnold Cemetery.
