SEM sweeps pre-holiday tournament titles

SUMNER -- The S-E-M Mustangs claimed both the girls and boys championship titles of the S-E-M Pre-Holiday Tournament Saturday night. The Lady Mustangs earned the championship by defeating the Sargent Lady Bulldogs 51-42 while the Mustang boys defeated Elwood 63-33 in the final game of the tournament for the boys crown.
In the girls championship game, Sargent held the 24-23 advantage at halftime but the Lady Mustangs picked up their team offense in the second half to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 28-18.
Sara Simmons led the Lady Mustangs with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She was followed by Megan Berg with 11 points, Kristen Karlberg with 10, Lauren Ibach 7 and Tabitha Anderson 6.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by sophomore Alex Hart who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Also, getting into the scorebook for the Lady Bulldogs were Kelsey Frink with 11 points, Jamie Kirwan with 8, Rebecca Davenport 6 and Tristan Kirwan with 3.
In the boys championship game, the S-E-M Mustangs got off to a fast start setting the tone for the ball game. The Mustangs used tough defense to create Elwood turnovers which resulted in quick transition points on the offensive end for the Mustangs. The Mustangs doubled up Elwood 19-8 after the first quarter before Elwood calmed down offensively to hit some 3-pointers in the second quarter to narrow the Mustang lead to 27-22 at halftime. The Mustangs then played the second half as they did in the first quarter, they tightened up defensively to create more offensive opportunities in transition to outscore Elwood 36-11 in the final two quarters.
Dillan Line scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Mustangs. Lance English also had a strong offensive game posting 15 points, 7 steals and 6 assists. Others who scored for the Mustangs were John O’Neill with 6 points, Angel Boteo with 3, Nolan Smith 3, Brandon Trampe 3, Andrey Gallegos 2 and Brian Guerra with 2.
The Sargent Bulldogs defeated the Arcadia Huskies 50-30 in the third place contest. The Bulldogs claimed a 30-11 advantage at halftime but struggled offensively to begin the second half. The Bulldogs matched Arcadia with seven points in the third quarter and outscored the Huskies 20-19 in the second half.
The Bulldogs were led by Guy Fenske who had 11 points and 9 rebounds. He was followed in scoring by Ridge Horky with 9 points, Tyke Kozeal with 8, Brady Sutton 6, Casey Richards 5, Theo Williams 5, Lane Bennett 4 and Jack Gibbens 2.
Brady Chilewski led the Huskies with 10 points followed by Dalton Williams, Cameron Charles and Luke Schmauder with 6 points each. Andre Loehden also scored for Arcadia with 2 points.
Information was not received for the Arcadia versus Elwood third place game.
In girls first round action at the S-E-M Pre-Holiday Tournament Friday night, the Sargent Lady Bulldogs defeated Elwood 69-55. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 22-4 first quarter lead and held the lead through the remainder of the game.
Frink led the Lady Bulldogs with 24 points followed by Hart with 20, J. Kirwan 13, Josie Simmons 8, Rebecca Clark 2 and T. Kirwan 2.
The other first round girls game saw the S-E-M Lady Mustangs advance to the title game with a 56-34 win over the Arcadia Lady Huskies. The Lady Mustangs scored 34 first half points with 22 in the first quarter and held the Lady Huskies to just nine first half points. The Lady Mustangs held the lead through the final two quarters for the win.
Simmons led the Lady Mustangs with 19 points followed by Brooks with 13, Berg 10, Anderson 6, Lauren Ibach 4 and Miranda Pierce 4.
The Lady Huskies were led by Gabi Ritz with 10 points followed by Shayla Trotter with 7, Demi Dorsey 6, Darian Williams 5, Sapphire Sillivan 4 and Brittany Bose 2.
