July 27, 2014

UPDATE: Matthew A. Grubtill, 23, of Broken Bow, was arrested late Saturday and taken into custody after Broken Bow Police executed a search warrant on a Broken Bow residency. He is being charged with arson and criminal mischief and was booked into the Custer County Jail. The investigation of the fire at the Catholic Church is ongoing.

FIRE at ST. JOSEPH's

St. Joseph Catholic Church members gathered in their Parish Hall for Sunday morning Mass July 27, as they did the evening before due to a Saturday morning fire in their Church next door.

Broken Bow Fire and Rescue were called to the Church shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday with reports of smoke bellowing out the front of the church. Mutual Aid was called and then turned back with Broken Bow's Emergency Response teams spending around two hours on scene.

The State Fire Marshal was summoned as evidence of vandalism and possible arson were discovered on scene. Additional information will be printed in the Thursday Custer County Chief, as well as on www.custercountychief.com as it becomes available.

Please note that due to the fire, funeral services for Lorraine A. Scott, 83 of Broken Bow, have been moved to the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Sargent at 10 a.m.
