Viola Spencer Lucas, 85

December 22, 2010

Viola (Ada) Spencer Lucas was born June 7, 1925. She departed this life Dec. 14, 2010, at Broken Bow.
Services were Dec. 18, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold with Pastor Dale Coates and Frank Scott officiating. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery with Arnold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Viola and her twin sister, Iola, were born at the family home near Weissert. They were two of 12 children born to Ralph and Elsie (Pirnie) Spencer.
Viola went to West Weissert Country School. She was always so proud of the fact that she was chosen to represent her country school at the local spelling bee. Her formal education ended at the 8th grade due to poor health.
Viola met and married Bob, Jan. 30, 1949. They farmed and ranched south of Arnold on the Lucas family homestead. To this union three children were born; Michael Douglas, Betty Jo and Phillip McCllelan. Later nephew, Ed Larsen, joined the family.
Viola loved and enjoyed her family, and always had time for them. She played many a card game with her grandchildren, which was one of their favorite things to do with her.
She loved to sing. The family has many memories of her singing hymns as she worked around the house.
Viola bowled on a Monday afternoon league and thoroughly enjoyed it. She had many great stories to tell of going to state bowling with the girls.
She rarely missed listening to Nebraska football games on the radio. Even after she moved to Off Broadway, she continued her enthusiasm for the Huskers.
All 11 of the kids walked across fields to the Weissert Church of God where Viola, at a young age, became a lifelong follower of Jesus. After they were married, Bob and Viola raised their family in the Arnold Methodist Church. She was often found reading her Bible, and her faith sustained her through the challenges of life.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Ralph and Elsie; husband, Bob; two brothers; three sisters; one sister-in-law, and eight brothers-in-law.
Viola is survived by her children, Mike (Marcy) Lucas, Jo (Craig) Rosentrater, Phil (Kendra) Lucas, and nephew Ed (Jane) Larsen; grandchildren, Lucas Rosentrater, Matthew Lucas, Amy (Joe) Buehler, Joseph Lucas DeMarco, Julie (Barry) Gaston and Adam Lucas; sisters, Ethel Sams, Frances Scott, Ellamae (Russell) Moseley, Darb (Jerry) Ahrens, Jean Olson and Iola Purintun; two sisters-in-law, Betty Mckain and Roberta Clark; many nieces and nephews; great-grandson, Jude Buehler and great-granddaughter, Ada, who will be born in January.
Viola will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
