Nebraska lawmakers spar over feedlot permits

March 31, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers will continue to clash on whether the state or counties should set policies to help develop agriculture.

The Legislature sparred Tuesday over a measure that would create statewide standards for livestock producers trying to obtain permits.

Advocates say the bill encourages growth in the Nebraska's top industry by simplifying the permit process for new or expanding operations. But opponents say a "state-down" approach discredits county boards' knowledge of local community needs.

Bills slated for debate include personal property tax legislation to benefit businesses and a $45 million annual increase for the state property tax credit fund, which reduces the amount property owners must pay.

Some say the state can and should do more, but others are tamping down expectations that other property tax measures will be approved this year.

Nebraska high court: Doors should have stayed

March 28, 2015

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The adage goes that if opportunity doesn't knock, build a door. One rural Nebraska couple were forced to build 12 when they arrived at their newly purchased home to find all of the interior doors missing.

The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in favor of the couple Friday, agreeing that the man who sold them the building should have disclosed that he planned to take the building's doors with him.

The high court's decision upheld a Custer County District Court ruling last year that found Andrew Solomon was wrong to take the building's 12 interior doors.

March 28, 2015

The filing marks the first time Colorado has defended legal marijuana in writing. The federal government did not sue to block the state's 2012 vote to legalize pot for all adults over 21.

March 15, 2015
