Members sought for Nebraska health care boards

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's Board of Health is seeking professional members for several health care boards.

The boards are responsible for licensing health care providers. Terms run for five years.

There are vacancies on boards for alcohol and drug counseling; audiology and speech language pathology; chiropractic; cosmetology; dentistry; mental health practice; nursing; psychologists; podiatry; registered environmental health specialists; and veterinary medicine and surgery.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Property taxes have surfaced as a key issue in Nebraska's race for governor, with the candidates offering drastically different approaches for easing the burden on farmers, ranchers and homeowners.

Chicago facility fire impacts Omaha flights

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nearly 20 Omaha flights into or out of Chicago airports have been canceled because of a fire at an air traffic control facility in a Chicago suburb.

Omaha Airport Authority officials urged travelers to check with their airlines or go online at www.flyoma.com to see whether their flights have been affected.

Officials say Friday's early morning fire started in the basement of the Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center in Aurora, forcing evacuation of the center. More than 850 flights had been canceled in Chicago alone, and more cancellations were expected.

BBPD to hold 'Drug Take Back' event

On Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public will have a chance to get rid of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the Broken Bow Police Department, 116 South 11th Avenue.

BBPD and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are holding the Take Back event to encourage local citizens to dispose of prescription drugs in a safe and responsible way. The Police Department will be accepting pills for disposal (The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, or any aerosol containers).

This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Broken Bow Child Care License Revoked

Lincoln—The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, has revoked the license of a child care provider in an emergency order issued last week.

Fae Beaumont, 43852 Paulsen Road, Broken Bow, can’t provide care for any children other than her own.

She may request a hearing within 15 days of the receipt of the emergency revocation order and will be afforded a hearing within 10 days of the request, unless a continuance is granted.

Nebraska health insurance cost dispute unresolved

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A major Nebraska health insurer has been unable to come to terms with one of the state's biggest medical networks, so thousands of people are either facing significantly higher costs or changing doctors.

No talks have been held since the contract between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska and Catholic Health Initiatives expired Sept. 1. So the facilities and doctors affiliated with Catholic Health Initiatives are no longer part of the Blue Cross network.

Nebraska Senate hopefuls jab Sasse in final debate

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Several Nebraska U.S. Senate hopefuls took shots at Republican frontrunner Ben Sasse during a final pre-election debate that focused heavily on guns, immigration and free trade.

The debate in North Platte highlighted sharp differences between Sasse and Democratic nominee Dave Domina, while allowing the two independent candidates equal time to make their cases.

Listings include name of school, season record, previous week's ranking, previous week's result and this week's opponent (NR-not ranked). The rankings are based on a formula that includes ratings from the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star plus experts for each class. Class A: Dale Miller, Grand Island Independent. Class B: Jeff Fielder, Scottsbluff Star-Herald. Class C1: Tom Behmer, Norfolk Daily News. Class C2: Brent Wasinius, Fremont Tribune. Class D1: Andrew Bottrell, North Platte Telegraph.

Weather cancels Wednesday (Sept. 10) events at Husker Harvest Days

(Grand Island, NE)- Heavy rain in Hall County and surrounding areas has forced the management of Husker Harvest Days to cancel all activity planned at the Husker Harvest Days event site for Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Extremely muddy conditions have made parking areas impassable. All access gates to the site will be closed on Wednesday. Visitors who had planned on attending the event should revise their travel plans accordingly.

Gale to announce decision on Ricketts-Foley ballot

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale says his office is reviewing whether Republican gubernatorial candidate Pete Ricketts can switch his running mate on the November ballot.

Gale will issue a decision Wednesday on whether to allow State Auditor Mike Foley onto the ballot instead of Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann. Heidemann resigned Tuesday and said he is withdrawing from the GOP ticket.

Attorneys for the Ricketts campaign say Nebraska's constitution trumps a state law which imposes a Sept. 1 deadline for him to name a running mate.

Nebraska Lt. Gov. Heidemann resigns office

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann resigned from office and ended his candidacy Tuesday, one day after a judge granted a protection order to keep him away from his sister, who accused him of assault.

Heidemann announced his resignation at the Capitol alongside Gov. Dave Heineman. The Elk Creek farmer also stepped down as the running mate of Republican gubernatorial candidate Pete Ricketts.

Heidemann said he disagrees with the statements made about him, but decided not to fight to remain in office.
