UNMC/Nebraska Medicine designated as National Ebola Training and Education Center

The University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine, in collaboration with Emory University in Atlanta and Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City, have been awarded a $12 million grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish and co-lead the nation?s National Ebola Training and Education Center (NETEC).

2015 State Games of America Breaks Record for Entries

LINCOLN, Neb. (July 2, 2015) — The 2015 State Games of America (SGA) in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska is officially the largest SGA event since the inception of the games in 1999. So far, 13,119 competitors from 47 states and the District of Columbia have entered, surpassing the previous record of 10,803 entries at the 2007 SGA in Colorado Springs. SGA officials say they will continue to accept online entries for most sports at SGA2015.com.

Tuesday is the Mobile Food Pantry in Thedford.

Starting Thursday and running through Sunday is Crazy Days and the D.C. Lynch Carnival in Broken Bow. Also this weekend is the Broken Bow Alumni Weekend.

Last Day to Register for 2015 State Games of America

July 1, 2015

Today is the final day to register for most sports in the 2015 State Games of America, which takes place July 28 - August 2 in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities.

Register by midnight tonight, July 1, at SGA2015.com. All participants receive a shirt and pass to Opening Ceremonies, Athlete Villages, Closing Ceremony and the opportunity to meet and compete against athletes from 47 different states.

West Nile Virus Arrives in Nebraska

Protect yourself from WNV and tick-related diseases.

Lincoln – West Nile virus is synonymous with summer in Nebraska. A mosquito pool in Webster county is the first one to test positive for the virus this season.

“We spend more time outdoors over the Fourth of July and throughout the summer which increases our chances of mosquito and other bug bites,” said Dr. Tom Safranek, State Epidemiologist for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. “Remember to take simple steps like using bug spray to help protect you and your family.”

NEBRASKA JOINS MULTISTATE LAWSUIT CHALLENGING NEW EPA RULE

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson joined with Attorneys General from twelve other states[1] in filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) over the EPA’s new rule defining “Waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota.

Ricketts and father give $200K to death penalty campaign

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts and his father contributed most of the $244,000 collected by to the Nebraskans for the Death Penalty campaign in its first reporting period, according to expense reports released Friday.

Ricketts and his father, TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, each contributed $100,000 to the ballot drive that seeks to put the death penalty question on the 2016 ballot. The group released its financial information ahead of a Tuesday filing deadline with the state.

Candidates jumping early into Nebraska legislative races

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The general election is nearly a year and a half away, but some candidates for Nebraska Legislature are already jumping into the 2016 race to replace senators who are slated to leave office.

The Nebraska Secretary of State's office is receiving "a handful of calls a week" from potential candidates asking about filing requirements, deadlines and fees, said spokeswoman Laura Strimple.

Gaston Bridge will receive repairs

June 29, 2015

Halsey, NE – The Gaston Bridge on the Bessey Ranger District will be receiving necessary repairs starting June 30 and concluding on July 3. The bridge is located approximately 2 miles east of Thedford, NE on Gaston Road #259, where it crosses the Middle Loop River. The Gaston Road is the west entrance to the ranger district.

5th Avenue Construction Schedule

June 29, 2015

The construction scheduled for this week will be the following:

Pour South half of South B street intersection.
Pour east half of 5th Ave from 109+75 to 111+23.
Pour radii and driveways and sidewalks at South B intersection.
Move to North B street intersection.

Myers plans to move to the North B intersection and begin removals next week. JEO will be staking on Tuesday (7/6).
