Lightning survivor has no memory of deadly strike

July 14, 2014

DENVER (AP) — Justin Teilhet doesn't remember hearing a boom or feeling a sting, just waking up numb on the treeless tundra high in Rocky Mountain National Park and discovering his good friend was trying to revive his wife.

It was a lightning bolt, he learned later, and it killed his wife and left him with a burn on his shoulder and scrapes on his face when he was knocked to the ground unconscious.

Lightning killed two people last weekend in the popular park, where summer storms can close in quickly with deadly results.

Tanning bed, novelty lighter bills to become law

July 14, 2014

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will impose tighter restrictions on tanning beds and novelty lighters this week, and truckers who spill livestock manure in Omaha will have to pay a steeper fine.

The new laws are among 122 set to go into effect on Friday, when the three-month grace period from the end of the legislative session expires.

Many of the laws reflect compromises reached among lawmakers after hours of debate. Senators also approved major legislation to lower taxes and reduce prison crowding, but most of those measures won't come into play until next year.

Massive fire in Grand Island

July 14, 2014

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A portion of a downtown Grand Island building has collapsed during a fire.

Authorities say one firefighter suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze, which was reported about 8 p.m. Sunday and extinguished about four hours later. Some firefighters remained on the scene to combat hot spots. The building housed Ron's Transmissions and other businesses.

Fire Chief Cory Schmidt says fire crews and trucks from the Grand Island Rural Fire Department and from Hastings and St. Paul helped his firefighters.
