DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For candidates in the Midwest, almost nothing tops a photo opportunity with a barnyard animal or a colorful anecdote about life on the farm.

See a silver lining in the tax cloud? Naaa…

April 17, 2014

By Les Mann, Chief Publisher

All taxpayers and accountants should be doing their happy-tax dance this week; happy that another April 15 has come and gone. All the returns or extensions have been filed and it is time to relax and celebrate.
The sun is in the heavens, green is returning to the fields, we’ve sent our checks to the government (or already spent our refund). All is right with the world.
I love paying taxes. Yes, really.

Young Patriot

June 21, 2013

Dear Editor,

On June 13, 2013, at the Farmers’ Market in Broken Bow, I witnessed one of the most touching incidents I have seen in a long time. One of the vendors was displaying an American flag at her spot in the park. A young boy with his Grandma were shopping and as he approached the flag, he paused, lowered his head and proceeded to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” verbatim!! I was nearly moved to tears!! Oh what a moment to capture if I had only had a camera.

Being Prepared

May 30, 2013

By U.S. Senator Deb Fischer

This week, severe weather warnings and alerts were issued across the state. Eastern Nebraska experienced flooding from heavy rain, while hail, high winds, and tornadoes swept across central and western Nebraska.

The recent horrific tornadoes in Oklahoma remind us that natural disasters aren’t just heartbreaking news stories quickly forgotten, but rather are enduring challenges for the impacted families and communities.

Lives are tragically lost; homes, neighborhoods, and communities are destroyed; precious belongings and beloved keepsakes are wiped away.

By DAVE HEINEMAN, Nebraska Governor

Dear Fellow Nebraskans:

On May 27, we will observe the Memorial Day holiday in a variety of ways. For some, this weekend will serve as the unofficial start summer, and I encourage everyone to join family and friends and explore all Nebraska has to offer.
