Colten Eggleston, of Broken Bow is this year’s Spelling Champion. The seventh grader spelled 48 of 50 words correctly spread out over five lists of 10 words each in this year's competition Feb. 9 at the Municipal Building in Broken Bow.
As the champ, Colten is eligible to represent Custer County at the statewide competition conducted in Omaha next month. Tristan Johnson of Arnold as the runner-up, will be eligible to attend if Colten is not available. Tristan spelled 45 of 50 words correctly. Forty-eight students from grades 5-8 representing Anselmo-Merna, Ansley, Arnold, Broken Bow, Callaway, Sargent and area home-schoolers competed, with 13 students making it to the final two rounds.
Finalists included Colten, Tristan, and Grayson Garey of Broken Bow, Courtney Bailey and Matt Reed of Ansley and Lydia Connell of Arnold tying for third. Other finalists included Ellie Wells and Seth Spanel of Anselmo-Merna, Lafeyette Loper of Callaway, Joe Kruml of Sargent Jasmine Nelson and Morgan Eggleston of Arnold and KyAna Linder of Broken Bow.
