It’s going to be an exciting day at the Centurylink Center in Omaha as the State High School Wrestling comes to a close – by early evening the champs will be crowned, but every contestant should go home a winner. Yesterday’s mat battles resulted in ultimate emotions, sheer joy for the winners and utter disappointment for the losers. All were hard fought.
Here is the day as it lays out:
Wrestling at D120 - Mullen’s Dalton Zimmerman (31-7) faces William Bloom of Elm Creek (30-6) in the consolations. If this senior wins he will wrestle for a possible third-place finish. If he loses he’ll wrestle for 5th.
Wrestling at C120 – Sargent/Burwell/Loup County’s junior Dakota Harvey (25-2) takes on Cameron Perrett of Valentine, also a junior. Perrett has a 12-4 record. If he wins he will wrestle for third, if he loses he’ll wrestle for 5th.
Wrestling at D170 – Gideon Monette, a Mullen sophomore takes on junior Viktor Jonseth of West Holt. Jonesth is a junior with a 29-10 record. Monette sports a 20-3 record on the season. If Monette wins, he’ll wrestle later for 3rd, if he loses he’ll wrestle for 5th.
Wrestling at C285 – Dakota Divine is at state as a senior and has approached the mat, like the others here with determination. He takes on Trevor Fozzard, a senior out of David City. Divine entered the meet with a 39-4 record. Fozzard has a 16-4 record on the season. If he wins he’ll wrestle for that 3rd place medal, if he loses he’ll wrestle for 5th.
This evening, we have four area wrestlers still alive for gold. They’ll march in the parade of champions tonight at 4 p.m. There is nothing easy about today … these final matches tend to go to the wire and then some.
Wrestling at D106, Wyatt Lane, a junior from Arcadia-Loup City takes on senior Jacob Calvert of Dundy County-Stratton. This is Lane’s second appearance at state, he placed 4th last year and sports a 34-3 record for the season. Calvert sports a 36-5.
Wrestling at C132, Evan Gideon, a senior from Sargent/Burwell/Loup County came into the state meet undefeated 46-0 and has remained so. He takes on Joseph Gillham from O’Neill for gold. The O’Neill senior carries a 40-3 record for the year. This is Gideon’s third appearance at the state meet in his quest for gold. He placed 4th in 2012 and 5th in 2013.
Wrestling at C220, Brook Huffman of Sargent/Burwell/Loup County carries a 40-5 record and he meets Trent Wagner of Madison who comes into the meet with 42-0 record. It will be a senior meets senior on the mat.
Wrestling at 285, Grant Clausen of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller comes in with a 14-3 record and he takes on Zachery Zeleski of Overton. Zeleski, a junior has a 29-3 record. Clausen is a sophomore and his match yesterday was the won to watch. He topped Tanner Hircock of Amherst 5-3 but it took two overtimes to do the job. Both of these heavyweights gave everything they had.
Dalton Zimmerman of Mullen wrestling at 120 lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the semifinals. He takes on Aaron Hueftle of Eustis-Farnam here later this morning to see who boards the medal stand for 5th and who takes home the sixth place finish.
Dakota Harvey, wrestling for Sargent/Burwell/Loup County lost in the first round of the semis and take on Conner Bergquist of Southern Valley for the 5th place medal. He's guaranteed a spot on the medal stand.
The pressure mounts in Omaha -
Dalton Zimmerman of Mullen won in his final match of the weekend, topping Aaron Hueftle of Eustis-Farnam in a 4-1 decision. He takes home a 5th place medal.
Dakota Harvey took on Conner Bergquist of Southern Valley and won by fall at 4:59, in a match that used every trick in the book. Harvey was sitting 7-6 at the time of the fall. Dakota too takes home a 5th place medal.
Gideon Monette, a 170 pounder from Mullen, is warming up - moments from now he'll meet Chris Peterson of Elkhorn Valley to see who takes 5th and who takes 6th.
Dakota Divine, wrestling at 285 for Sargent/Burwell/Loup County will meet Justin Marguardt of Logan View in the 5th-6th place match. Dakota lost a heart breaker in round one of the semis. He lost to Trevor Fozzard of David City by fall at 1:59. Dakota was ahead 10-6 at the time of the reversal and the fall.
Gideon Monette of Mullen takes home a 3rd place medal - he beat Chris Peterson of Elkhorn Valley 7-5, controlling the match, controlling the time.
