Callaway's Ridder declared primary winner in re-count

Laura Strimple, Assistant Secretary of State & Communications Director

The final totals from a recount of the Public Service District 5 race have been certified, says Secretary of State John Gale. Mary Ridder of Callaway prevailed in the May primary to beat fellow Republican candidate Jerry Vap of McCook. District 5 encompasses 49 counties across central and western Nebraska.

That race was the only recount from the primary. Ridder secured 21,925 votes to the 21,879 votes received by Vap. The Democratic and Libertarian parties did not have any nominees. The Nebraska Canvassing Board voted to approve the updated numbers and incorporate them into the final report today.

Of the 1,165,308 Nebraskans registered to vote in the primary, 27 percent turned in ballots. Early voters accounted for 19 percent of that total.

Voting totals by party were as follows:
Republican: 208,954
Democratic: 84,009
Libertarian: 793
Nonpartisan: 19,712
Total: 313,468

The general election will be held Tuesday, November 8.
