Charles "Chuck" Blakeman, 86

Charles “Chuck” Blakeman, age 86, formerly of Merna, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.Charles Horace Blakeman was born to Wallace and Nellie lone (Lang) Blakeman Sept. 5, 1925, at Merna. He grew up on the family farm west of Merna, attending Fairfield Country School. He attended Merna High School until he was a sophomore when he left school to take over the responsibilities on the family farm.Chuck and Dorothy Bauer were married Aug. 24, 1952, in Doniphan. Chuck and Dorothy returned to the family farm west of Merna on Highway 2 where they raised three children. They spent many years farming and milking cows.Chuck could often be found driving around the community watching for deer and turkeys, checking out neighbors and what they were doing. He also enjoyed visiting with friends and family and he never met a stranger. He would do anything for anyone that ran out of gas, got stranded in a snow drift, or had a flat tire. He loved to laugh, play dice & cards, dance, drive fast and socializing. Some of Chuck's favorite past times included reading, parades and rodeos.Chuck is survived by one sister, Doris Roberts; three children, Charlene Blakernan of Hastings, Kathy and husband Steve Broady of Omaha, Randy and wife Lori Blakeman of Merna; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Josh and Valerie Blakeman and their son Jackson of Westerville, Matt and Katie Blakeman and their daughter Charli Jo of Broken Bow, Christina Broady of Omaha, Seanne Broady of Omaha, Scott Broady of North Kansas City, Mo., Eric and Cindy Broady of Olathe, Kan., as well as many nieces and nephews.Funeral serviees were Monday, May 7, 2012, at United Methodlst Church in Merna with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating. Burial was in the Cliff Table Cemetery west of Merna, with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements.Published in Custer County Chief May 10, 2012
