Sweet new business opens in Bow

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for a sweet gift for your sweetie Broken Bow’s newest business has the solution. Simply Sweet, located in the Arrow Mini Mall on Highway 2 in Broken Bow, opened for business Tuesday. The store features craft and gift items, along with the star of the store - chocolate! Michele Staggs is the owner and operator of Simply Sweet. She and her husband, Ed, moved to Broken Bow in July 2012, living the previous two years in Denver. Michele says she has been making chocolate, crocheting and making craft items for as long as she can remember. For years she has been practicing her craft from her home, and saw opening her own store as a great opportunity. “My older children are grown and gone, and the younger ones are now middle school age, so I decided it was time for me,” Michele says with a bright smile. Customers to her shop are greeted with bouquets of chocolate flowers - each one hand poured - boxes of chocolate covered pretzels, cake pops and other delicious treats. You will also find candles, some of them hand poured as well, crocheted baby blankets, gift baskets and some retail items. Michele features a number of unique items in her store, such as a special section of “hillbilly” gag gifts, natural sugar scrubs and cordless hot pads which are filled with rice. The pads can be placed in the microwave for heat or in the freezer for cold, and used anywhere on the body as a compress without having to worry about an electrical cord. She etches glass for special gifts, and is happy to etch a special saying, dates or names into the vase of a chocolate floral arrangement. The chocolate is also available in a variety of flavors, shapes and styles. Michele is originally from Kentucky. “I’m an Army brat, so I’ve been all over,” she says. Ed is a native of Colorado. While going through a divorce, Michele moved to Broken Bow with her mom. She met Ed, who was also recently divorced, through mutual friends 17 years ago. They both say it is a little ironic that they ended up back in Broken Bow where they met, but are extremely happy here. Ed is employed at BD, and Michele finds time between being a busy wife and mom to create dozens of hand poured chocolates and design items for the store. “There are very few things here that will be a constant - when something goes out generally something different will come in,” Michele explains. “I get bored making the same things.” Simply Sweet will be open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Michele will also do special orders with at least 48 hours notice, however she does not do weddings. She says she would also love to have consignors join her in the store. The services Michele offers in her store, Simply Sweet, are numerous, basically, if you’re looking for anything chocolate - she can help.
