Staff Writer

Third graders at North Park Elementary School in Broken Bow presented 61 thank you letters to local heroes after learning about the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Accepting the letters were Broken Bow Police Chief Steve Scott, Broken Bow Fire and EMS Coordinator Andy Holland, Broken Bow volunteer firefighter Zeke Atchinson, Sgt. Andren Uhlig of the Nebraska National Guard and LPN Tristan Berggren.

Third grade social studies teacher Katrina Shaw taught the children about the terrorist attacks.

“We talked about 9-11 and the heroes that came out that day,” Shaw said. “We wanted to acknowledge our local heroes.”

Broken Bow Police Chief accepted the letters on behalf of law enforcement. “It’s appreciated, that at that age, they seem to understand what we do in law enforcement, to protect, to serve and protect,” he said.
