Wanda Weatherly, 89

Wanda Alice (Gray) Weatherly, 89 of Broken Bow, passed away Dec. 8, 2013, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home. A celebration of life was Dec. 11 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Broken Bow with Mary Jane Gockley officiating. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway, with Iverson Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements. Wanda was born April 18, 1924, near Arnold, to Harrison and Iva (Chadd) Gray. Wanda was the third child of three. Wanda attended rural schools in the Callaway and Arnold areas. Wanda was united in marriage to Harry Harlan Weatherly in Lexington Jan. 21, 1942. To this union three children were born; Harlan Dean, Donald Charles and Sharron Elaine. The family made their home north of Oconto, near the South Loup River in the Riverside community. Wanda took pride in being active within the community and was a member of the Oconto American Legion Auxiliary 250 since 1962. She was the president of the DOES Drove 1688 in 1957, and a member of the Episcopal Church. In 1971, Harlan and Wanda sold the farm and moved to the Pee Dee community near Clinton, Ark., where Wanda started her own fabric business, “The Pin Cushion,” in Fairfield Bay. Wanda continued her community involvement by being a fair board volunteer for Van Burin County and helped start the county fair in the area. Harlan passed away in 1978. In 1995, Wanda moved back to Broken Bow. Wanda loved to sew, can, and take care of her flowers, yard and garden. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wanda is survived by her daughter, Sharron (Freddie) Leibhart of Broken Bow; son, Harlan Dean (Corinne) Weatherly of Clinton, Ark.; nine grandchildren, Christie (David) Ference of Ord, Kent (Gina Albus) Leibhart of Broken Bow, Freddie (Kimberly) Leibhart of Columbus, Mistie (Jesse) Ziems of Shelby, Laura (Trevor) Eggleston of Broken Bow, Terri Weatherly of Clinton, Ark., Karena (Kenneth) DeYoung of Valley Springs, Ark., Daniel (Shawna) Weatherly of Conway, Ark., and Denise (Chris) Green of Tyler, Texas; 21 great-grandchildren; cousin, Phyllis DeLong of Callaway, and brother-in-law, Johnny Weatherly of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harlan in 1978; infant son, Donald Charles; brothers, Gerald (Elsie) Gray and Harold (Mary Alice) Gray. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation to youth organizations within Custer County.Published in Custer County Chief, Dec. 12, 2013
